Telecoms Infrastructure Firm Nokia is anticipating a significant spike in network demand stemming from upcoming advances in Web3, metaverse, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Nokia’s Technology Strategy 2030 report states the company is planning to invest in its network equipment and services portfolio in the next few years.

Technology Strategy 2030

Thanks to the growing adoption of virtual reality devices and generative AI, Nokia is predicting a 22% to 25% increase in network demand between 2022 and 2030. The president of network infrastructure at Nokia, Federico Guillén, attributes this surge of demand to the growing mainstream acceptance and adoption of these technologies. Nokia’s Technology Strategy 2030 involves significant investment in its network equipment and services portfolio.

Through this investment, Nokia plans to cater to several emerging ecosystems with a strong focus on the Internet of Value, decentralization, blockchain, and smart contracts. The company will also focus on the metaverse, particularly human augmentation, spatial computing, and split processing. Other ecosystems that Nokia is looking to capitalize on include AI, Industry 5.0, Application Programming Interface (API) economy, and Cloud Continuum.

A Changing Landscape

Nokia expects a surge in new connected devices that will drive metaverse adoption across consumer, enterprise, and industrial sectors. Supply chains and manufacturing facilities will see a significant change with real-time interactions between enterprises and distributor systems.

This will enable efficient supply planning and estimation. The metaverse will help revolutionize manufacturing operations from design, testing, real-time monitoring, and remote maintenance.

Businesses are also seeing the emergence of Web3, with Nokia stating in its Technology Strategy 2030 report that cloud computing and advanced AI have become foundational requirements in an organization’s digital transformation journeys.

Nokia’s Experiments With The Metaverse

In 2022, Nokia set up two labs to study the metaverse and the technology that underpins the ecosystem. It also experimented with several metaverse initiatives in 2023. Nokia has also developed a future network architecture built using digital twin technology. A digital twin is a simulation of a physical object that is used for prototyping and testing in several industries, such as manufacturing and construction. Nokia has also been using the metaverse to assist Cessna aircraft technicians at remote airports.

“We had a 5G connected Microsoft HoloLens, and we were able to instruct people on how to service a Cessna using augmented reality in this case.”

An Emphasis On Intelligent Network Infrastructure

In its Technology Strategy 2030 report, Nokia strongly emphasizes advanced, dynamic, and intelligent network infrastructure capable of real-time performance optimization, zero-touch automation, customer experience analytics, advanced security, and privacy features. The incorporation of a digital twin system with diverse APIs will empower service providers and enterprises with streamlined management of interconnected infrastructures. Nokia hopes to transform how people communicate and position itself at the forefront of digital transformation.
