Last night, I was scrolling through Twitter to only notice that bitcoin was trending once more. In the hope that the leading cryptocurrency had spiked in price to unimaginable highs, the reality was much more sincere.

Many users on the social platform have been left in shock after witnessing what many people are calling the worst hack of a major social media platform yet. Over the past couple of years, there have been many crypto related scams but nothing to this level.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past 12 hours, you may have heard about this bitcoin related scam. The identity of the hacker is still unknown but essentially, they got ahold of the official Twitter accounts of some of the biggest names in the world including Bill Gates and even the former president of the United States, Barack Obama.

After the hackers got into these official Twitter accounts, they ran a fake cryptocurrency giveaway scam and in less than five minutes, they had seemingly sold $15,000 out of people in bitcoin.

The tweets promoting the scam/giveaway have been deleted and they were all similar to one another. This hack was clearly very sophisticated as these big verified Twitter accounts of entrepreneurs and celebrities have duped a lot of people sending their Bitcoin.

The platform is still investigating the hack at the time of writing.

It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out. For more news on this and other crypto updates, keep it with CryptoDaily!
