Square Crypto Project Manager Explains Reasons Behind Picking Rust-Lightning for LDK

The leading cryptocurrency, bitcoin has given itself some strong ground to stand on in terms of market dominance over the past decade. However, it isn’t just the market that it has an in on, but also in its community. So much so that many community members have often classed it as toxic. Despite this, the leading cryptocurrency and its ethics still continue to gain traction from several notable people in the regulatory space as well as the fintech industry.

The CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey is one of the biggest names to support the leading cryptocurrency. He has made many efforts to make bitcoin easy to use and contributed to its adoption for mainstream audiences in recent years. All on the back of the Square Crypto, his side project. 

The platform recently secured in the United States a patent for fiat-to-crypto payment networks and even announced it’s Lightning Development Kit for bitcoin wallet and app developers.

The project manager at Square Crypto, Steve Lee recently spoke on the development kit and what it means for the future. Speaking in an interview with Stephan Livera, he explained that the development kit was intended to be an implementation of the lightning protocol. For all the bitcoin wallet applications focusing on the leading cryptocurrency that would end up venturing into lightning payments, this would be a bullish idea. He further stated:

“So, imagine the iPhone you use or your Android phone use lots of different apps on that phone, and those apps when they’re developed, they use functionality that Apple or Google provides in the underlying operating system to be able to draw on the screen and accept input and et cetera. And so I mean that’s what a Development Kit is.”

In talking about the reasoning for the team choosing Rust-Lightning, Lee stated that there were numerous reasons including the language being one of the safest to build in something as important as Lightning. He further added:

“Rust is a good choice, because it doesn’t have a garbage collector and it doesn’t have a lot of run time overhead that other languages have. So that makes it easier to integrate, in technical terms link Rust library with an existing application.”
