Cryptocurrency and the UK General Election are much more related than you think…
Maybe we’re grasping at straws here but the majority of people who are interested in crypto and blockchain are part of the millennial generation and it looks like their the people that are going to be determining this election.
Before we get into it if you haven’t voted yet and you’re a UK resident who’s eligible to get involved in the election, vote! It’s so important for the future of the country and potentially the future of crypto.
Millennials and crypto
You can’t ignore the millennial connection to cryptocurrency. This is the first generation in human history that is truly digital. They even make up for half of the worldwide bitcoin owners!
A recent survey has found that up to 29% of affluent millennials have already put some sort of money in bitcoin. In the United Kingdom, there are more than 40 crypto platforms, which is more than any other country excluding the EU.
But it appears the country’s leading political parties, the Conservatives and Labour have forgotten about these new technologies even existing.
Labour refers to “AI and automation” in their manifesto but nothing about blockchain. On top of the NHS reform and tax move, Labour wants to ensure “new technologies” are created in the UK and exported. But as per Decrypt, “the focus is on clean alternatives to heavy industries rather than finance and digitisation.”
The Tories, or the Conservative party, haven’t really done much with crypto since they got into office in 2010. That being said, I can’t imagine it’s their main priority to look into an emerging asset class like bitcoin.
The UK is one of the most welcoming countries for cryptocurrency and blockchain companies though. Whereas crypto isn’t legal tender, it surely isn’t banned in any way.
It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out but please remember to vote!
