On-balance volume, or OBV, is a volume-based indicator that turns trading volume into a single running line. When price closes higher than the previous close, that period’s volume is added to the line. When price closes lower, the volume is subtracted. If the close is unchanged, the line stays flat.
The idea is simple. If big buying is happening behind the scenes, volume should rise on up days and pull the OBV line higher, often before the price trend itself looks strong. If the line rolls over while price is still climbing, that can warn that buying pressure is fading.
How OBV is calculated
OBV is built from three rules applied bar by bar on any timeframe, from minutes to months:
- If Close today > Close yesterday: OBV today = OBV yesterday + Volume today
- If Close today < Close yesterday: OBV today = OBV yesterday − Volume today
- If Close today = Close yesterday: OBV today = OBV yesterday
There is no single “correct” starting value. Many chart packages begin at zero, some start at the first period’s volume. The absolute number does not matter. What matters is the direction of the line, its slope and whether it confirms or diverges from price.
You can calculate OBV on any consistent definition of close. On daily charts that is the session close. On intraday charts it is the close of each bar. The shorter the timeframe, the more noise you will see in the line.
What traders look for on an OBV chart
OBV is most often used to confirm trends and to spot potential turning points:
- Trend confirmation. If price is rising and OBV is rising, that supports the trend. If price is falling and OBV is falling, sellers remain in control.
- Divergences. If price makes a higher high but OBV fails to make a new high, buying pressure may be weakening. If price makes a lower low but OBV holds up, selling pressure may be easing.
- Breakouts. Traders sometimes draw trendlines on OBV itself. A clean break in the OBV line can precede or validate a price breakout.
- Smoothing. Because OBV can be choppy on short timeframes, some traders plot a short moving average of OBV to filter noise. Crosses of the smoothed and raw lines are used as simple signals.
None of these signals is foolproof. OBV can stay flat or whipsaw during ranges, and sharp news moves can overwhelm any volume pattern.
A step-by-step example
Here is a simple five-day sequence. OBV starts at zero.

Across the five days, price is up from 100 to 102 and OBV has climbed from 0 to 2.6 million. Day 3 saw a drop in price, so OBV fell by that day’s volume, but the later up days added more volume than the down day subtracted. The rising OBV lends weight to the short uptrend.
Common variations and data quirks
OBV is sensitive to how you define an up or down period. Most traders compare the current close with the prior close. Some compare with the prior bar’s close within the same session on intraday charts. Either approach works as long as you are consistent.
Equal closes are treated as no change by many platforms. A few charting tools may carry forward volume or apply special handling. Check how your platform defines OBV before you rely on a signal, because small rules can change outcomes around flat closes or during very quiet sessions.
Data quality matters. OBV depends on the accuracy of volume in your market data. In equities the exchange-reported volume for the listing is usually the reference. In multi-venue or 24-hour markets such as crypto, you might see exchange-specific OBV lines or aggregated versions. Different sources will not always match because of venue coverage, trade classification and the handling of wash trades or outliers.
Adjustments can also create kinks. Corporate actions that change price history, like stock splits or special dividends, may alter where OBV appears to turn when you use back-adjusted prices. Some platforms adjust both price and volume, others adjust only price. Be cautious when comparing OBV across data vendors.
OBV versus other indicators
OBV is a volume flow gauge. It does not look at price momentum directly. A popular momentum study like MACD is derived from exponential averages of price, not from volume. The two can complement each other. For example, price momentum can weaken before OBV rolls over, or OBV can fade while price momentum still looks healthy. When both point the same way, confidence in the signal is usually higher.
Simple price tools are often paired with OBV too. Moving average crossovers on price can be confirmed by a rising OBV, and price breakouts from ranges may be more convincing if OBV also breaks its own range.
Limitations and practical tips
- It is cumulative. OBV grows large over time and the absolute figure is meaningless. Focus on direction, slope and structure, not the level.
- Ranges can be tricky. In sideways markets OBV may whipsaw with every small price change. Look for a clear break in OBV out of its own range before acting.
- Volume is not liquidity. A burst of prints can move OBV without guaranteeing tight spreads or easy execution. Liquidity conditions shape fill quality and slippage.
- Timeframe alignment. Match your OBV timeframe to your strategy. A weekly OBV is too slow for a short-term setup. A one-minute OBV is often too noisy for swing trades.
- Context first. OBV does not incorporate news, supply announcements or index events. Treat it as a secondary confirmation tool rather than a stand-alone trigger.
- Test your rules. The signal style you choose matters, whether that is divergences, OBV trendline breaks, or a moving average of OBV. Back-test on similar markets and timeframes before relying on it live.
