Wasabi Wallet Restricts US Users Under Regulatory Pressure

Amid regulatory uncertainty and recent developments in the United States, zkSNACKs has decided to block U.S. users from accessing Wasabi Wallet and its services. The company, known for its open-source Bitcoin wallet, announced this move via a blog post, citing concerns over recent announcements by U.S. authorities.

As a result of this decision, users from the U.S. and related territories are unable to access the Wasabi Wallet website or download the wallet. An IP address firewall has been put in place to restrict access to associated websites, APIs, RPC interfaces, and other related services for U.S.-based users.

The decision follows recent incidents involving other privacy-focused wallet providers, notably the arrest of the founders of Samourai Wallet and Tornado Cash. The U.S. Department of Justice has accused these individuals of operating cryptocurrency mixing services allegedly used for money laundering.

Concerns over the legal implications and responsibilities of developers of privacy-enhancing tools have arisen in the wake of these arrests. While DOJ prosecutors argue that profiting from the criminal use of such services could constitute money laundering, industry advocacy groups defend developers’ free speech rights.

A spokesperson from zkSNACKs expressed concerns about regulatory uncertainty surrounding self-custodial wallets like Wasabi Wallet. They emphasized the need to avoid exposure to such uncertainty and stated their belief in Wasabi Wallet’s compliance with current legislation and regulations.
