We know itâs early on a Monday morning, so toilet humour may be a little unsettling but either way, news is news and even if its about poop, if its relevant, weâre going to report on it.
Before we begin, let me introduce you to Anaerobic Digestion. In the words of Biogas-info.co.uk:
âAnaerobic Digestion (AD) is a natural process where plant and animal materials (biomass) are broken down by micro-organisms in the absence of air. The AD process begins when biomass is put inside a sealed tank or digester. Naturally occurring micro-organisms digest the biomass, which releases a methane-rich gas (biogas) that can be used to generate renewable heat and power; this helps cut fossil fuel use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.â
Moreover:
âAD is not a new technology, it has been used in the UK since the late 1800s, but now an increasing number of AD plants are being built in the UK to generate clean renewable energy. AD is also used to treat the waste produced in homes, farms, supermarkets and industries across the UK. This helps divert waste from landfill.â

A company based in the North of England, is about to make the most of this technology to help power cryptocurrency mining, giving miners the opportunity to get involved in  a rather stinky, but green new crypto mining initiative.
According to Brand-e, 4New are based in the North East of England and manage two power plants that rely on Anaerobic Digestion to produce clean energy. 4New wish to use these plants to also power cryptocurrency mining efforts.
According to Brand-e, 4New have said:
âAt end-1Q18, one Bitcoin transaction consumed as much power as 30.5 US households for a day, a 500% spike since September 2017. Our free energy is consumed by an onsite mining farm enabling us to present a sustainable, viable and scalable solution to facilitate widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies.â

Within this, 4New are taking a very novel approach to cryptocurrency mining and are offering a solution that could become very useful for areas with little in the way of natural resources such as wind, water and sun that could otherwise be used to produce renewable energy. Moreover, not only does this system create a cleaner energy source, it also helps reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfill, relying on decaying foodstuffs and other organisms for the production of energy.
You never know, next time you purchase a Bitcoin, it might have been powered by poop. How exciting!
