A lot is the standard unit size used to place or measure a trade. It tells you how much of the underlying asset you are buying or selling, and it often sets the minimum or incremental order size you can submit.
The meaning shifts a little by market. In shares, a lot can mean a round lot such as 100 shares in some venues, or simply the exchange’s minimum tradable increment. In derivatives, a lot anchors the contract size or multiplier. In forex, traders talk in standard, mini and micro lots that translate directly into currency units.
Why markets use lots and what they control
Lots bring order to trading. By fixing a standard size, they help match buyers and sellers, simplify quoting and make costs and risks easier to calculate. A lot size can influence:
- Order entry The minimum quantity or step size you can submit. Some shares trade in single-share increments, others in set bundles.
- Quoting and fills Dealers and algorithms often quote around common lot sizes. Odd sizes can be slower to fill in thin names where liquidity is limited.
- Risk and P&L With a known lot or contract multiplier, you can map price ticks to cash gains or losses.
- Margin For leveraged products, lot size defines the notional exposure that your margin must cover.
Round lots, odd lots and board lots in shares
In equities, a round lot is a commonly accepted standard order size. In some markets that is 100 shares, in others it can differ by venue, price level or instrument. An odd lot is anything that is not a round lot, such as 17 or 37 shares. A board lot is an exchange-specified standard lot that may vary with a stock’s price. The exact terms and thresholds are not universal.
Why care? Because market behaviour can differ by lot type. Round lots often see tighter spreads and more displayed size. Odd-lot orders can still execute quickly in liquid names, but in thinner stocks they might attract wider pricing or partial fills. Many brokers now allow fractional shares for investing, which sits outside traditional lot conventions, though exchange order books still operate in discrete share increments.
Corporate actions also matter. After a stock split, the practical lot size for trading may feel different even if the formal definition has not changed. Keep an eye on your broker’s ticket and the venue rules you are routing to.
Lots in futures, options and other derivatives
In exchange-traded derivatives, a lot usually refers to the contract’s standard size:
- Futures Each futures contract has a fixed specification. Examples include a defined number of barrels for an oil contract or a set index multiplier for an equity index future. One lot equals one contract unless you specify multiple.
- Options Equity options typically control a standard number of underlying shares via a multiplier, often 100 shares for a single contract in some markets. Index and futures options use their own multipliers. These can change after corporate actions or special adjustments, so check the contract’s current terms.
- CFDs and spread bets Providers set their own contract sizes and quote in lots, per-point stakes or units. The mapping between one lot and the underlying exposure can vary by provider, so always read the product specs before trading.
In all cases, the lot or multiplier defines your exposure per tick. Combine that with tick value and you can estimate day-to-day P&L swings and the margin requirement.
Lots in forex and crypto
Forex uses lot terminology as shorthand for currency units. A standard lot is commonly 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot 10,000 and a micro lot 1,000. Some platforms also offer nano lots. Not every broker maps these labels in the same way, so the platform’s contract size and minimum step are what count.
Crypto markets mix spot trading in coin or token units with derivatives that use lot-based contracts. A perpetual swap or futures product might define one contract as a fraction of a coin, one coin, or a fixed notional amount quoted in fiat terms. Because design choices differ across venues, check the contract multiplier, minimum order size and tick size before you place the first trade.
How lot size affects price, margin and P&L
You can break most position calculations into three parts:
- Notional exposure Quantity in lots × contracts per lot × contract size or multiplier × underlying price.
- Tick value Contracts × multiplier × tick size × currency conversion if needed.
- Margin A percentage of notional or a risk-based figure set by the exchange or broker, which scales with lots.
Consider three quick sketches:
- Shares Buying 2 round lots of a stock where 1 round lot is 100 shares means 200 shares total. If the price moves by 0.50 per share, your unrealised P&L moves by 100.
- Equity index future One contract has a multiplier of 10 per index point. Buy 3 lots. A 5-point move in your favour is 3 × 10 × 5, so 150 in currency of the contract before fees.
- FX Long 0.3 standard lots of EUR/USD is 30,000 euros. A 10-pip move with a pip value of roughly 1 per 10,000 in the quote currency equals about 30 in P&L, subject to the exact pip value on your platform.
These simplified numbers ignore funding, commissions and slippage. They do show how quickly exposure and P&L scale with lots. A small change in lots can materially change risk, particularly in leveraged products.
Placing orders and working with odd sizes
When you send an order, the ticket may ask for lots, units or contracts. Read the field labels carefully. On some platforms, 1 lot equals 1 contract. On others, 1 lot can map to multiple underlying units. If you are aiming at a precise monetary risk, translate your desired exposure into the platform’s lot language before hitting submit.
Odd sizes deserve a mention. You can usually buy or sell odd lots in modern equity markets, and they often fill at competitive prices in liquid names. In thinner markets, an odd lot can sit behind round-lot interest. A limit order helps control the execution price when you are trading off the standard size.
Common confusions and tips
- Lot size vs tick size Lot size is the trade quantity increment. Tick size is the minimum price increment. Both shape execution, but they solve different problems.
- Contract multiplier drift Options and certain futures options may change multipliers after corporate events. Check the clearing notice or your contract specs.
- Minimum order quantities Some venues or auctions require board lots to participate. Odd lots might not interact with all parts of the book.
- Costs scale with lots Commissions, exchange fees and funding generally rise with the number of lots or contracts. Factor them into expected P&L.
- Risk first Decide your acceptable currency risk, then back into the number of lots. This keeps lot size a risk decision rather than a habit.
In short, a lot is the market’s unit of measure for size. Learn the contract or product specs you trade, and you will know exactly what one lot buys you, how much a tick is worth and how your margin responds when you scale up.
