Brent crude is a benchmark grade of oil used to price much of the world’s seaborne crude. It refers to light, sweet (low sulphur) oil produced in the North Sea and is quoted globally in US dollars per barrel.

Traders, refiners and analysts use Brent as a reference price for contracts, hedges and comparisons. News headlines often cite “the Brent price” when discussing the cost of oil and the state of energy markets.

What Brent crude actually refers to today

Originally, Brent named oil from the Brent field between Scotland and Norway. As production from individual fields declined, the benchmark broadened to represent a blend of several North Sea streams. The idea is to keep the reference liquid and representative of crude that’s widely traded on open water routes into Europe and beyond.

In practice, different physical cargoes are priced as a premium or discount to a dated Brent reference. The adjustments reflect quality differences, timing and loading location. This keeps the benchmark useful even as the exact mix of contributing fields evolves over time.

Two qualities make Brent suitable as a benchmark. First, it’s light and low in sulphur, so it tends to be cheaper to refine into high‑value products like petrol and diesel. Second, it’s seaborne, which means cargoes can move by tanker to wherever demand is strongest, giving the market a broad, international read on price.

How Brent prices are set: spot, futures and indices

When people say “Brent is trading at X,” they might mean one of several related prices:

  • Spot or cash market. Physical cargoes changing hands for near‑term delivery. A commonly watched reference here is “dated Brent,” which reflects prices for cargoes loading in the coming weeks.
  • Futures. Exchange‑traded contracts that lock in a price for delivery (or cash settlement) in a given month. Each futures contract represents a fixed number of barrels, often 1,000. Brent futures are widely used by producers, refiners and funds to hedge or speculate on price moves across multiple months on the curve.
  • Indices and assessments. Price reporting agencies and exchange methodologies compile trades and bids to create daily indices. Certain futures contracts settle to these indices in cash, rather than requiring buyers and sellers to deliver physical oil.

Because futures cover different months, you’ll often see a price curve. If near‑term contracts trade below later ones, the market is in contango. If near‑term contracts trade above later ones, it’s in backwardation. These shapes matter for storage economics and for anyone rolling a position from one expiry to the next.

Where you’ll see Brent in real‑world decisions

Brent appears in refinery purchase contracts, airline fuel planning and energy company budgets. Governments and central banks watch it as a signal for inflation pressure. Equity investors track it because oil producers’ cash flows often swing with the benchmark.

Portfolio builders sometimes treat commodities as a separate sleeve within their asset classes mix. They might gain exposure via futures, commodity indices or energy‑linked shares. The exact vehicle changes how closely the investment follows Brent itself, and how it behaves through rolls and storage costs embedded in futures.

Retail traders encounter Brent through news quotes, exchange‑traded products that reference Brent futures, and contracts for difference offered by some brokers. Product structures, costs and risks vary by provider.

Brent versus WTI and other grades

Brent is often compared with West Texas Intermediate (WTI), the main US benchmark. Both are light and sweet, but their logistics and market centres differ:

  • Location. Brent represents North Sea crude priced for global seaborne trade. WTI is priced at an inland US hub, then moves to refineries or export terminals.
  • Market influences. Brent can be more sensitive to European demand, Atlantic Basin shipping and global geopolitics affecting seaborne flows. WTI can respond more to US production, pipeline capacity and inventory dynamics.
  • Spread trading. The Brent–WTI price difference is closely watched. Traders use it to gauge regional tightness and, at times, to look for arbitrage opportunities after accounting for quality, transport and hedging costs.

Beyond WTI, Middle Eastern benchmarks such as Dubai or Oman are used for pricing into Asia. Heavier or higher‑sulphur crudes often trade at a discount to Brent, reflecting higher refining costs to meet fuel standards.

A quick hedge example

Consider a European refiner that plans to buy 500,000 barrels of crude in three months. If the manager worries that Brent might rise before then, they could buy five futures contracts, each covering 1,000 barrels, for the target month. If Brent climbs by 5 dollars per barrel by the time they purchase the physical cargo, the higher feedstock cost is offset by a gain on the futures position. If Brent falls instead, the cheaper physical purchase is partially offset by a loss on the futures, leaving the refiner closer to the budgeted cost either way.

Flip the scenario for a producer. A North Sea operator expecting to sell cargo in six months may sell futures today to lock in a revenue level. Should spot prices fall by the time the cargo loads, the loss on the physical sale is cushioned by a gain on the short futures position.

These are simplified examples. In practice, firms fine‑tune volumes, hedge ratios, timing and the choice of contract month to better match the physical exposure.

What drives moves in Brent

Brent responds to a mesh of supply, demand and financial factors:

  • Production and policy. Output plans from major producers, field maintenance and unplanned outages can tighten or loosen supply.
  • Global demand. Economic growth, industrial activity and travel patterns shift consumption of refined fuels, which feeds back into crude demand.
  • Inventories and storage. Stock levels on land and afloat act as a buffer. Rising inventories can weigh on prompt prices and steepen contango; falling stocks can support backwardation.
  • Refining margins. When refineries earn stronger margins on products like diesel or petrol, they have more incentive to run hard and buy crude.
  • Freight and logistics. Tanker rates, pipeline availability and shipping routes influence where cargoes flow and what regional benchmarks trade at versus one another.
  • Currency. Brent is quoted in dollars. When the dollar strengthens, oil can become more expensive in other currencies, sometimes dampening demand at the margin.
  • Positioning and macro sentiment. Flows from hedgers and funds, shifts in interest rates and changes in perceived risk appetite can amplify moves over short horizons.

Put together, Brent crude is less a single oilfield’s output and more the world’s shorthand for the price of internationally traded, high‑quality crude. It underpins contracts, guides hedges and frames countless market conversations about energy and the wider economy.
