Birra Peroni To Integrate Blockchain Technology Into Their Supply Chain

Italian beer brand Birra Peroni is the latest in a slew of corporate brands that have integrated blockchain technology for supply chain traceability purposes.

EY announced that the beer company would be using their EY OpsChain Traceability on the public Ethereum blockchain and each batch of beer would have its own unique corresponding NFT.

A number of food suppliers have used blockchain technology to provide their supply chain solutions. Not only does this technology provide complete traceability from the product to the consumer; blockchain traceability technology is far more affordable than other traceability solutions, making it attractive to SMEs (small and medium enterprises).

Transactions added to the blockchain are time-stamped, and are not easily tampered with, according to a World Trade Organisation report. Blockchain technology effectively removes many of the barriers for importers and exporters, and makes the processes of the supply chain much more effective.

Federico Sannella, Corporate Affairs Director of Birra Peroni commented on the collaboration:

“The bond with the agricultural supply chain and the quality of our 100% made-in-Italy malt are fundamental strategic assets. We believe that sustainability is deeply related to the respect for the raw material, and we wanted to bring this value alive to our consumers, allowing them to follow the journey of the malt from the field to the bottle.”

As agriculture is one of the industries under pressure to make their process ethical, traceability has been one of the ways that industries can achieve this. The consumer demand for greater access to the source of their products crosses many industries, but in particular the textile and food industry. Companies are able to prove the ethical source of their products through their traceable supply chain.

Paul Brody, EY Global Blockchain Leader certainly regards blockchain as the future of the supply chain:

“We envision a future where everything from inventory to purchase orders to invoices can be tokenized and integrated into a decentralized finance and business operations ecosystem,”
