Southampton FC has announced they will be partnering with the Coingaming group Sportsbet.io, extending their current agreement as Main Club Partner for another three years.
The partnership between the Premier League football club and blockchain based Sportsbet.io is the biggest in the club’s history, and will see the team including the brand as a front of shirt sponsor. In addition to the front of shirt deal, the club will also be given the option to receive Bitcoin as performance-based bonuses at the end of the season. Which, with Bitcoin maintaining a strong position, will likely be more popular than it was last year.
Sportsbet.io became a Main Club sponsor in 2020, and will now cement their partnership for the next three years. Following on from the success of blockchain based sponsorship agreements, with the likes of Manchester City and Bayern Munich partnering with blockchain networks, mainstream sporting organisations collaborations with blockchain projects are increasing in frequency.
David Thomas, Southampton FC Chief Commercial officer commented on the collaboration between Sportsbet.io and Southampton FC:
"The team at Sportsbet.io have built a successful business by challenging convention and disrupting the market, but in a responsible way, and their approach to our partnership with them has been no different. "In a short timeframe they've proven to be innovative, forward thinking and extremely supportive of the club, our fans and the wider community, and we've welcomed the opportunity to develop and promote safe gambling messages together. As such they have become valued partners and we look forward to the next chapter together."
Maarja Pärt, CEO of the Coingaming Group, said of Southampton FC:
"Our first season as Southampton FC's Main Club Partner has already exceeded all expectations. We've been inspired by the passion of the club and its fans, and it was an easy decision for us to extend our partnership with the Saints for another three years.
"From the beginning, Southampton have been a perfect match for the fun, fast and fair way we do things at Sportsbet.io. We can't wait to continue this journey with the Saints, and we'll be doing everything we can to support the team and its community into the future."
While several football clubs have engaged with blockchain companies over the last few years, other sporting bodies have also started to tap into blockchain solutions. The Professional Fighters league was the first league to launch a fan token on rewards and engagement app, Socios.com earlier this month, becoming the first sporting organisation in the US to do so.
