A satoshi, or sat, is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, resulting in a total of 2,100 trillion satoshis. To understand inscriptions, it's important to know they involve embedding content onto satoshis using the Ordinals protocol. This process doesn't require a separate token, side chain, or any alteration to Bitcoin itself. The Ordinals protocol enables the embedding of various types of information onto each satoshi, including texts, images, audio, and video. However, due to the limitations of Bitcoin blocks, the primary focus for inscriptions, often referred to as minting, is on text and images, typically in the form of NFTs and tokens.
