Australian airline Qantas has revealed plans of releasing its own collection of branded digital art collectibles or NFTs, scheduled to drop in mid-2022.
NFTs To Feature ‘Qantas History’
It seems like these days, NFTs are everywhere. From entertainment companies to sporting organizations, everybody is dropping their own line of NFTs. Not only do these digital tokens rake in funds in cryptocurrency, but they also enhance the customer’s experience with the brand by opening up doors to the metaverse. One such brand to adopt these digital collectible tokens to further enhance their brand experience is Australine airline provider Qantas. The company recently announced that frequent flyers of the airline will now have “a new way to own a piece of Qantas history.”
However, Qantas is not the first airline provider to release to join the NFT hype. Back in 2021, airBaltic launched its NFT collection with a series of digital artworks featuring the Airbus A220 aircraft flying over Latvian cities. In the same year, Emirates Airlines had announced that a new blockchain-based Covid-19 health passport was being tested in five countries. These health certificates would basically function as non-fungible tokens that would be documented on the blockchain and remain tamper-proof.
Qantas Points Rewards For NFT Holders
An NFT or non-fungible token is a unique digital asset that can not be replaced and is usually minted to represent digital or non-digital assets like documents, artwork, audio files, video clips, and so on. The Qantas NFT website is teasing its upcoming launch with a split image of its iconic Boeing 747 in two familiar liveries. The announcement on the website reads,
“We’re looking to the future for our next collection of memorabilia. A new set of digital art collectibles is gearing up for release as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Using blockchain technology, each piece of digital artwork will be one-of-a-kind allowing you to buy, own, collect and sell your unique tokens.”
The teaser also reveals that an initial buyer of these NFTs will be able to earn Qantas Points that would entail additional rewards and benefits for these NFT holders that would be revealed soon.
The Environmental Aspect
Despite their recent craze, NFTs have drawn much criticism due to their impact on the environment. Most NFTs are minted on the Ethereum network, which is still functioning on an energy-heavy Proof-of-Work system. However, Qantas has planned ahead and stated that the upcoming collection would be released on a low-carbon platform with net-zero emissions and carbon offsetting.
