Earlier reports from June found that the Portuguese football team S.L Benfica had begun accepting Bitcoin and Ether payments for match tickets and merchandise for the club. The end goal for the club was to get ahead of the increased crypto adoption among football clubs by taking digital currency payments via the payments processing firm UTRUST.

A month earlier in May and the popular CoinMarketCap began sponsoring the Israel-based Beitar Jerusalem Football Club as an official partner. One of the countries most famous footballers, Yossi Benayoun is a well-known investor in Bitcoin and a former Beitar player.

As reported by CCN:

“One of the facilitators of the rising crypto football wave is Premium Division team Gibraltar United that launched cryptocurrency payments for its players in an attempt to provide more transparency and reduce the corruption in the sports industry.”

Accepting cryptocurrency as a team can help foreign players in their banking at least that’s according to the Gibraltar United co-owner Pablo Dana.
