Mt. Gox Exchange Paying Back Creditors?

We’ve all heard of the Mt. Gox crisis that occurred back in 2011. Well, we recently saw the former head, Mark Karpeles get sentenced for crimes he still denies but now, users who held Bitcoin on the exchange and filed for self-admission rehabilitation claims potentially could receive some of their funds back according to an unconfirmed email.

It was addressed to all Mt. Gox users with the message saying:

“The creditors who objected to your self-approved rehabilitation claim withdrew their objections. As a result, the approval of your self-approved rehabilitation claim has become effective, and you no longer need to file an application for claim assessment.”

The email was posted on Reddit by the user DerEwige, who accompanied the post with a screenshot of the alleged email which was written in both Japanese and English.

The user interpreted the email to mean that even users of Mt. Gox who failed to fill out a rehabilitation claim after losing their Bitcoin have had a claim automatically made in their name, which has now been approved.

On top of this, the Reddit user said that they were unsure about when any kind of compensation would be given, and exactly how much Bitcoin the affected users would receive.

The accuracy of this email is questionable with two Mt. Gox creditors saying that hadn’t received any form of an email from the exchange in regards to this matter.

According to users in the MtGoxCreditors Telegram channel, self-admission claims that weren’t claimed in bankruptcy or civil rehabilitation were no longer objected to if the users were able to identify themselves.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you will have heard of the Mt. Gox hack. In 2011, the exchange was the victim of the biggest hack in history with 850,000 Bitcoin stolen. Following this, the exchange went under three years later, with 24,000 creditors out of pocket.

Earlier this month, Mt. Gox’s trustee announced that all creditors who filed rehabilitation claims had received a decision but warned the timing and method of repayment had not been determined.
