Hacker Makes $20k Off Bitcoin, “Security Is Just An Illusion”

One person has taken to the dark web to sell around 620 million of stolen customer details according to The Register who claim they have been in touch with the seller and the database is 100% real. The hacker has said that the data was collected over the past year through remote-code execution attacks after compromising vulnerabilities in web applications.

The details that were stolen follow a 16 high profile data breaches including those of MyHeritage (92 million), MyFitnessPal (151 million, 8fit (20 million) Fotolog (16 million). All are for sale at the total price of around $20,000 in Bitcoin. Here is the whole list of websites that were compromised:

  • Dubsmash (162 million)
  • MyFitnessPal (151 million)
  • MyHeritage (92 million)
  • ShareThis (41 million)
  • HauteLook (28 million)
  • Animoto (25 million)
  • EyeEm (22 million)
  • 8fit (20 million)
  • Whitepages (18 million)
  • Fotolog (16 million)
  • 500px (15 million)
  • Armor Games (11 million)
  • BookMate (8 million)
  • CoffeeMeetsBagel (6 million)
  • Artsy (1 million)
  • DataCamp (700,000)

The stolen information has data that will specifically be of interest to that of spammers which could be used for credential stuffing. This mostly includes names, passwords, emails and even personal details like social media verifications.

The stolen passwords are allegedly hashed so hackers will need to be able to crack them before being able to use them. The most exposed are people who use weak passwords that can be easily decoded and reuse them for several accounts.

Some of the aforementioned websites came forward as soon as they were hacked and informed their clients to reset their account passwords. This is an operation that goes back years but the seller cliams to have twenty databases and instead of releasing them all online, some of them will be kept hidden for ‘private use’.

The hacker made a worrying statement to The Register saying:

“Security is just an illusion. I started hacking a long time ago. I’m just a tool used by the system. We all know measures are taken to prevent cyberattacks, but with these upcoming dumps, I’ll make hacking easier than ever.”

It seems that due to the decentralised nature of crypto, hackers and digital currencies go hand in hand.
